Privacy policy
The short version
- No ads, no tracking, and no account required.
- Your progress is stored on your device and in your own iCloud. We can't see it.
- Your answers are graded on your device.
- Nothing about your practice leaves your device unless you choose to share it.
Who we are
Tadoru is made by Jens Opedal, Japan. In this policy, “we” means the maker of Tadoru. If you have a question about your data, write to privacy@tadoruapp.com.
What stays on your device
Tadoru is built to work without sending your learning data anywhere. These stay on your iPhone, iPad or Mac:
- Your progress: which kanji and keigo patterns you've learned, when they're due for review, and your history of answers.
- Your answers: the readings and meanings you type. They're graded on your device and never sent to us.
- Your settings: appearance, pace, reminders and the tanuki's level.
- Reminders and widgets: notifications are scheduled on your device, and widgets read the same local data.
iCloud sync
If you're signed in to iCloud, Tadoru syncs your progress between your devices through Apple's iCloud, in your private iCloud database. We can't read that data. Apple stores it under your Apple Account and Apple's privacy policy applies. You can turn sync off in Tadoru's Settings, under iCloud.
What Tadoru downloads
Tadoru checks our server for app settings and for new or corrected practice content. These requests don't include your progress, your answers or anything that identifies you. Like any request on the internet, they reveal your IP address to the server. Our hosting providers (Supabase for the server, Cloudflare for content downloads) keep standard logs of these requests for a short time for security and operation. We don't use them to identify or profile you.
Tapping a sentence's source link opens tatoeba.org in your browser, where Tatoeba's own privacy policy applies.
Purchases
Subscriptions are bought through Apple's App Store. We never see your payment details. We use RevenueCat to check what you've bought and unlock Pro on your devices. For that, RevenueCat and we receive a random identifier for your install and your purchase records: which plan, when it started and renewed, and its country and price. These are kept as long as needed for billing, refunds and accounting. See RevenueCat's privacy policy.
To link a purchase to your install, Tadoru creates an anonymous user id on our server. It isn't connected to your name, email or Apple Account.
Helping improve Tadoru (optional)
You can choose to share your practice history with us. It's off unless you turn it on, in onboarding or in Settings. If you do, Tadoru sends your answer events (which sentence, how you answered, and how it was graded) with an anonymous user id. We use them only to find sentences that are too hard, unclear or wrongly graded, and to improve the course. We don't sell them, and we don't use them for advertising. You can turn sharing off at any time, and ask us to delete what was shared.
What we don't do
- We don't show ads or use advertising identifiers.
- We don't track you across other apps or websites.
- We don't sell or rent your data to anyone.
- We don't use analytics or crash-reporting SDKs from third parties. If you've agreed to share diagnostics with developers in your device's settings, Apple may pass us anonymous crash reports.
Deleting your data
- On a device: delete the app. You can also reset your kanji progress from the Library.
- In iCloud: on iPhone, go to Settings › [your name] › iCloud › Manage Storage, choose Tadoru and delete its data. This removes it from all your devices.
- On our server: email privacy@tadoruapp.com and we'll delete anything tied to your anonymous id within 30 days. Purchase records we must keep for tax and accounting are the exception.
Your rights
Depending on where you live (for example Japan, the EU, the UK or California), you have the right to ask what data we hold about you, to have it corrected or deleted, to get a copy of it, and to object to how it's used. Because we hold so little, most requests are simple. Write to privacy@tadoruapp.com and we'll answer within 30 days. You can also complain to your local data protection authority.
Where the law asks for a legal basis: syncing and purchases are needed to give you the service you asked for, server logs are kept for our legitimate interest in running a secure service, and optional sharing is based on your consent.
Children
Tadoru isn't directed at children under 13, and we don't knowingly collect personal data from them.
Changes
If this policy changes, we'll update the date at the top. If a change affects what leaves your device, we'll also tell you in the app before it takes effect.
